General Information

About the Survey

The 1998 Chesapeake Human Resources Association (CHRA) Benefits and Compensation Survey provides specific compensation information on exempt, non-exempt, and union positions and a national benefits summary. This is the twenty-fourth edition of the Annual CHRA Survey, and the eleventh year that the survey has been conducted by William M. Mercer, Incorporated (Mercer), a national consulting firm specializing in employee benefits, compensation and human resources management.

Survey questionnaires will be mailed to interested participants late April, 1998. Your data will be due to Mercer by the end of May, 1998. Mercer will review, tabulate, and analyze the survey data for report publication by September, 1998.

Participant Characteristics

Survey participants represented the following geographic areas:

  • Baltimore City - All areas within city limits
  • Northern Region - Owings Mills, Reisterstown, Towson, Hunt Valley, Timonium, Carroll County, and Pennsylvania
  • Northeastern Region - Dundalk, Essex, White Marsh, Harford County, Cecil County, and Delaware
  • Western Region - Catonsville, Randallstown, and Frederick County
  • Southern and Southwestern Region - Anne Arundel County, Howard County, and Calvert County
  • Washington DC and Suburbs  - Montgomery County, Northern Virginia, Prince George’s County, and Washington DC

Survey participants represented the following industry classifications:

Education/Government - Public, private, and trade schools; universities and colleges; municipal, county state government services and agencies

Finance/Insurance/Legal - Banking, insurance, savings, investment, legal, real estate and financial services

Service/Hospitality - Lodging and food, professional, personal, repair, security, custodial and related services

Non-Profit Services - Not for profit organizations, including trade and professional associations, labor unions, foundations, charities, religious, and public service organizations

Manufacturing - Producers of goods, including gasoline and oil, printing and binding

Retail/Wholesale/Distribution - Retail/wholesale trade or sale of goods and services through stores and catalogs; sellers, promoters and shippers of merchandise to customers

Health CareHospitals, clinics, geriatric and nursing services, health maintenance organizations and other health care providers

Other - Real Estate, construction, transportation, and utilities

Data Confidentiality

Mercer protects the confidentiality of individual companies’ compensation data. As a result, no compensation data is displayed where there are less than three data points.

Survey Cost

You may still purchase the 1997 survey results (data effective May 1, 1997) . The cost for the 1997 survey and the 1998 survey are the same. Your cost depends on two factors: (1) whether your company was a survey participant and (2) the number of employees for your organization.
